Donegal Mental Health Advocacy Services provide a safe place for people who have experienced mental health difficulties to express their personal narratives and emotions. The advocates they encounter will work in a person-centered, non-judgmental and empathetic manner.
We recognise that many of our clients are marginalised within society, they feel excluded and disadvantaged. With this in mind we aim to work in a hollistic manner, supporting our client's needs emotionally, socially, economically, and culturally.
At Donegal Mental Health Advocacy Services we are proponents of the recovery model. We believe that everyone who has experienced mental health difficulties, with the help of the right treatments and supports, can go on to live a productive and meaningful life. By fostering a positive, optimistic and healing environment we can help our clients to develop new meanings and purposes within their lives, beyond their illness.
The advocates work towards prodiving a friendly and approachable service. We are always willing to listen. We understand the importance of working on a one to one level, always seeing our clints as experts in their own lives. We value their right to make choices and be involved in decisions affecting their lives. To facilitate this we endeavour to provide relevant up to date information around the services and resources which are available to them. When necessary we will help represent for our client to statutory, voluntary or private organisations.
Donegal Mental Health Advocacy Services believe in taking the focus away from the person's deficits and instead focusing on their strengths and resources. Our objective is to harness their abilities, assets, hopes and interests to allow them to build their own identity. As advocates we will model our ability to see beyond the person's disability. In turn, this supports their ability to develop new meanings and purpose outside of their illness.
All the work undertaken by Donegal Mental Health Advocacy Services endeavours to promote the individual's own sense of empowerment. We recognise the feelings of disenfranchisement that came along with the previous medical model. Our work centers on giving people the send of confidence, belief and hope that they can go on to live happy, purposeful and productive lives.
